This website presents a dictionary of the place names of Greater Manchester from the earliest, which probably date from the 7th century, to those which have emerged in the 21st century. It does not pretend to be comprehensive but is intended to be a first attempt to compile a guide to the many place names of our county. Click on ‘dictionary’ in the menu.
Note that the dictionary here is a temporary file in simple Word format. It is hoped to replace it with a fully-searchable dictionary in the near future.
It is, however, very much a work in progress and it appears online so that others can contribute by filling the gaps and correcting the errors. Click on ‘contact’ in the menu.
